The second photo was taken in Tasmania, where one of the three subspecies (Vombatus ursinus tasmaniensis) live.
The second, Vombatus ursinus ursinus, is now found only on Flinders Island.
Around my area there is the mainland Vombatus ursinus hirsutus (top photo).
As a kid I remember hearing them munching on grass outside my beadroom window at night.
Although the photos here shows them out in the sun, they are mostly nocturnal, sleeping in burrows during the day.
The common wombat was once a lot more common but its natural range has been somewhat restricted since the arrival of Europeans.
They also suffer from the mange, which is a slow, horrible way to die.
