Fungus are neither plants nor animals, they are in a kingdom of their own. Most of the time however they are invisible, living in soil as microscopic organisms. Its only when they produce their fruiting bodies that we get to see them easily.

They often live off decaying organic matter and are therefore frequently found on logs and leaf litter. Other species are parasitic, both on living plants and animals (most notably insect larvae).

Usually fungus spores require moisture in which to reproduce, resulting in their greature diversity in wet climates. I live near the Dandenong Ranges and find Sherbrooke Forest, with its Cool Temperate Rainforest areas, to be ideal for seeking them out and indeed many of the photos you find here were taken in that forest.
