These are large dragonflies with a wingspan around 11cm and a body length of 7cm.
They have distinctive yellow-orange on brown-black pattern along the tail (abdomen).
Males and females are very similar but unlikely to be confused with another species
if the pattern on the back can be seen.
They are common, particularly at lower altitudes, including around Melbourne.
They're distributed throughout Australia, as well as nearby islands (such as New Zealand).
Even in Victoria they can be found most of the year (except winter).
