These are medium-sized dragonflies fairly common along the south-east coast of Australia.
They are pale yellow when newly emerged.
Females will turn vivid yellow or yellow-orange with maturity while
males will get a deep red tail while the head and thorax turn black.
This species is very similar to the slightly smaller, more common and widespread Diplacodes bipunctata.
Diplacodes melanopsis has more distinct patterns along the abdomen
and does not have two spots on the side of the thorax like D. bipunctata.
