New Dragonflies and Damselflies

This table lists when I have seen an odonata species for the first time (most recent first).

Scientific Name Common Name Date Location Comments
2012/13 — 5 new species (so far)
Austroaeschna obscura Sydney Mountain Darner 31 December 2012 Blue Mountains, NSW Spotted several but was only able to photograph one.
Telephlebia godeffroyi Eastern Evening Darner 31 December 2012 Blue Mountains, NSW Fairly common where I encountered them.
Austroargiolestes isabellae Sydney Flatwing 28 December 2012 Blue Mountains, NSW Common around here.
Eusynthemis tillyardi Mountain Tigertail 28 December 2012 Blue Mountains, NSW Common around here.
Griseargiolestes griseus Grey Flatwing 28 December 2012 Blue Mountains, NSW Common in swamps around here.
2011/12 — 10 new species
Griseargiolestes fontanus Springs Flatwing 26 April 2012 Lamington National Park, QLD To the untrained eye this looks similar to several other species.
Austroargiolestes amabilis Flame Flatwing 26 April 2012 Lamington National Park, QLD A striking but not rare damsel, limited to mostly rainforest creeks.
Synlestes selysi Forest Needle 22 April 2012 Bunya Mountains National Park, QLD Also spotted a few days later at Lamington.
Hemicordulia intermedia Yellow-spotted Emerald 22 April 2012 Burnett River, Mundubbera, QLD Only saw this one individual perched during the morning.
Zyxomma elgneri Short-tailed Duskdarter 20 April 2012 Carnarvon Gorge, QLD I've only seen the one individual of this species.
Episynlestes albicauda Southern Whitetip 20 April 2012 Carnarvon Gorge, QLD Observed at several locations on a Queensland trip.
Ictinogomphus australis Australian Tiger 19 April 2012 Miles, QLD Moderately common along the Queensland and Northern Territory Coast.
Austroaeschna ingrid Grampians Darner 7 January 2012 Grampians National Park, VIC Only having just realized this new species was described in 2008 I tried my luck a couple of times until I found them on my second visit.
Austrocordulia refracta Eastern Hawk 24 December 2011 Croajingolong National Park, VIC Saw these flying around a riverine pool in the evening and had trouble identifying them from my poor in-flight photos.
Cordulephya montana Mountain Shutwing 24 December 2011 East Gippsland, VIC Although it turns out I had seen these a few years earlier I had misidentified them as the more common but similar Cordulephya pygmaea.
2010/11 — 12 new species
Austroaeschna sigma Sigma Darner 7 April 2011 Bunya Mountains, QLD It was a fairly cool day on the mountains and I thought I wouldn't see much but when the sun came out I saw a couple of these.
Agriocnemis pygmaea Pygmy Wisp 6 April 2011 Ban Ban Springs, QLD Stopped here for dinner and saw something interesting at the pond, which turned out to be this new species.
Argiocnemis rubescens Red-Tipped Shadefly 6 April 2011 Good Night Scrub, QLD I almost didn't stop to search this area but was glad I did as it housed many dragonflies as well as butterflies.
Austrogomphus melaleucae Twinspot Hunter 3 April 2011 Severn River, Strathbogie, NSW Seen at the same place as Austrogomphus amphiclitus but the following day I initially thought I had seen the same one again.
Austrogomphus amphiclitus Pale Hunter 2 April 2011 Severn River, Strathbogie, NSW Only the one seen but not uncommon in the region.
Hemigomphus heteroclytus Stout Vicetail 5 March 2011 Hodgson Creek, near Everton, VIC Very similar to the Southern Vicetail, which is common in Victoria, several previous times I have thought I had seen heteroclytus.
Austrogomphus cornutus Unicorn Hunter 5 March 2011 Ovens River, Wangaratta, VIC Common in northern NSW this is about the extent of their distribution south.
Spinaeschna tripunctata Southern Cascade Darner 11 February 2011 Wonnangatta River, near Dargo, VIC Fairly widely distributed up the east coast of Australia but uncommon I encountered one of these along with three other darners in the same spot.
Nannophlebia risi Common Archtail 26 January 2011 Ovens River, Wangaratta, VIC Once again this species is fairly common in NSW and Queensland but this is about the only location it is known from south of Sydney.
Diphlebia nymphoides Arrowhead Rockmaster 8 January 2011 Freestone Creek, Briagolong, VIC Having known for some time that this species lives along this rocky creek I finally made the effort to visit. This is probably the most common species in Victoria that I hadn't seen.
Coenagrion lyelli Swamp Bluet 22 December 2010 Bunyip State Park, VIC There were several males at a roadside dam I had visited numerous times before.
Austroagrion cyane South-western Billabongfly 12 December 2010 Piccaninnie Ponds, SA Although having visited the area on numerous occasions in the last few years this was the first time I had seen this species. Being this close to the border it is only a matter of time for it to be discovered in Victoria.
2009/10 — 7 new species
Pseudagrion ignifer Flameheaded Riverdamsel 12 June 2010 Burnett River, QLD On my first visit to Queensland I only saw one new odonata species — it was winter after all.
Dendroaeschna conspersa Wide-faced Darner 6 April 2010 Snowy River National Park, VIC A rare dragonfly.
Austroaeschna inermis Whitewater Darner 20 February 2010 Eucumbene River, Snowy Mountains, NSW An uncommon dragonfly because it lives in high-altitude rocky rivers.
Austrogomphus australis Inland Hunter 18 February 2010 Ovens River, Wangaratta, VIC Supposedly fairly common on large inland river I only saw this one unhealthy specimen.
Austroaeschna flavomaculata Alpine Darner 25 January 2010 Bogong High Plains, VIC An uncommon high-altitude dragonfly.
Crocothemis nigrifrons Black-headed Skimmer 27 December 2009 Millicent, SA A fairly widespread dragonfly that I've yet to see in Victoria.
Austrolestes aridus Inland Ringtail 23 October 2009 near St Arnaud, VIC Upon going through some old photos I noticed some of this species a few months earlier than I thought I'd first seen them.
2008/09 — 5 new species
Archaeosynthemis orientalis Eastern Brown Tigertail 1 February 2009 Bunyip State Park, VIC Found sporadically in south-east Australia (including Tasmania) but not common.
Procordulia jacksoniensis Eastern Swamp Emerald 17 January 2009 Lake Mountain, VIC A fairly common species of shallow swamps at all altitudes.
Pseudagrion microcephalum Blue Riverdamsel 14 January 2009 Elusive Lake, Croajingolong NP, VIC Not previously recorded for Victoria this species is quite common north around the coast from Sydney into Western Australia. Checking photos from a previous visit I realized I had also seen this species here in 2006 but hadn't identified them properly at the time
Nannophya australis Australian pygmyfly 13 January 2009 East Gippsland, VIC Another new species found during an orchid survey. This species is rare in Victoria and slightly more common half way up the east coast.
Hemiphlebia mirabilis Ancient Greenling 14 December 2008 Long Swamp near Nelson, VIC Previously considered rare and with a limited distribution subsequent searches yielded many individuals at numerous locations including in South Australia.
