A smaller damsel with the mature male having particularly striking coloration of a red head and thorax, mostly black along the top of the tail and some blue markings on top of the end of the tail. The female has a pale thorax by comparison (see second photo) and lacks the blue markings. Could be mistaken for the larger Pseudagrion aureofrons if not viewed well (particularly tenerals with female P. aureofrons.

These damselflies can be found throughout most of Australia, inhabiting slow rivers or dams. In Victoria they can be seen in flight from mid spring through to late autumn.
