This is a common and widespread damselfly, generally found around still water at lower altitudes from mid spring to early autumn. Males have mostly blue and black coloration, except for the stripes atop their thorax, which are usually greenish. Females have black and pale brown or green markings. Both have a distinctive horizontal stripe behind their eyes, which helps to identify them from other species.

Segments 8 and 9 of the abdomen are mostly blue except for some black occupying less than half the length of the segment along the top. As you can see from the first image (taken in the Brisbane Ranges west of Melbourne), the black in segment 8 can be almost non-existent.
