There are a few reserves in and near the Dandenongs with particular emphasis on
conservation for this special butterfly.
They feed and lay eggs on particular plants, giving them their name, but also making them vulnerable to habitat destruction.
The distribution map above shows more continuous than their actual distribution in the wild, which is fragmented.
There is also a fair degree of variation in sub-populations and some might not easily be recognizable as a Swordgrass Brown Butterfly.
In the last couple of years I have only seen these in isolation until I visited Bunyip State Park.
In one location (in an area that had burnt the previous year) there were many fluttering elegantly around the regenerating forest.
