Abundance &
Common from Sydney to Cairns but also found through mainland Australia include the inland.
HabitatMostly found around rocky rivers but also occur around still waters, particularly large lakes and dams.
DescriptionMature males are bright red all over, usually with some mild, dark shading on the insides of the wings. Mature females are yellow to orange and usually have larger shaded areas but more to the middle and outer of the wings.
Diagnostics &
Similar Species
Although slightly larger than Diplacodes bipunctata, females of the two species look very similar.
Behaviour &
Like most in this genus they tend to be mostly perched and fly several metres when disturbed. Males are often found waiting for females on exposed rocks beside water.
