Return of the Giants

3 January 2015

Exploring Gang Gang swamp, like I had the previous two seasons, I easily found the giant dragonfly Petalura gigantea on this visit. I was even able to get good photos of a female. These dragonflies are easy to photograph, not just because they are large but also because they mostly perch — the males wait for females and the females hide as taking off in breeding country invariably means being being immediately pounced upon by the nearby males.

I also saw numerous jewel beetles including several in the Castiarina genus and the large Temognatha variabilis. For the latter I thought at the time the different color patterns indicated different species but researching them now it seems they are all the one, with an obvious species name.
