Dragonflies of Penrose State Forest
9 February 2014
Spent the day in Penrose State Forest in southern NSW, still primarily looking for the Giant Dragonfly Petalura gigantea
They are known for the area but I failed to see any.
It was a hot day, close to 40°C, and I spent the afternoon relaxing by a creek.
These sorts of temperatures are too hot for many dragonflies to be very active and I saw several darners just hanging around in the shade,
including some males of the large dragonfly Austrophlebia costalis
that I was able to get fairly close to for the first time.
I ended up recording 18 species for the day (plus two more with photos not good enough for ID) — not bad for one site.
