Bend of Islands Dragonflies

20 March 2013

Visited some site in Bend of Islands, on the northern side of the Yarra River. The main purpose was to see Parasynthemis regina (Royal Tigertail). Numerous were discovered there this season by a friendly local (Frank Pierce), who showed us around the area this year. This species is rare south of the dividing range. Another species rare around Melbourne is Diplacodes haematodes (Scarlet Percher), which had also found a home in the area. Interestingly all three Diplacodes species found in southern Australia (D. bipunctata, D. haematodes and D. melanopsis, called the same small stretch of water home.

I'm off to Queensland for several weeks now where I hope to see interesting stuff so won't be updating my site until I return.
