Sassafras Creek Fungus

25 March 2012

I spent the pleasant afternoon walking along Sassafras Creek from Monbulk to Kallista with my main (and, as it turned out, only) target being fungi of various descriptions.

There wasn't a huge variety out yet (it is an early fungus season this year) but there was a lot of Orange Pore fungus Favolaschia calocera about. A native of Madagascar this is an exotic and invasive species that is probably displacing endemic species and possibly even disrupting the food chain here.

Also sighted were a couple of developing Coral-tooth Fungus fungus_Hericium_coralloides, one of my favourites.
