The Pines, Frankston

15 August 2007

Wandered around The Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve today, highlight was the snake a friendly couple alerted us to. I believe it to be an Eastern Tiger Snake, Notechis scutatus scutatus. In the morning it was sunning itself at the edge of the track and I went back later to share my lunch in its presence, hoping to get some more photos.

I also saw three orchid species fully in flower (all greenhoods) and near some I saw Boneseed, Chrysanthemoides monilifera, an environmental weed. I started pulling them out but a turn in the corner yielded a forest of them so I gave up. It would need a dedicated visit, at least with gloves, to tackle them.

Also saw a recently dead fox, hopefully a victim of some 1080 poisoning.
