Probably the last visit for the dragonfly season to the Big Peninsula area east of Warburton.
I got there too early as by this time of year the sun is lower and the dragons didn't start flying until around 10am.
Not many species this time either, the river was dominated by male Swamp Tigertail, Synthemis eustalacta.
These were however very difficult to photograph as they flew off very readily, even early.
The female, photographed away from the river, was a bit more relaxed.
Also interesting was a sighting of a pair of Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters, Lichenostomus melanops.
They seemed interested in the wasps flying in and out of a nest along the path.
I also briefly saw a very large, brown and clumsy dragonfly.
It flew in, bumped into the sedges at the edge of the river, dipped its tail into the pool then
disappeared high into the trees.
I would have liked to have had a better look at it as it seemed larger than the
Austroaeschna pulchra I saw at the site.
Afterwards I went to La La Falls.
The falls themselves aren't particularly great to look at, especially after having recently visited the
Otways, but the walk is quite pleasant.
At falls I saw a bright red crayfish, a little different to what I'm used to in the Dandenongs.
Also observed a Southern Tigertail, Eusynthemis guttata flying around the stream
(and between my legs) depositing eggs.
In the photo she is just dipping her tail into the wet ground while in flight.
