Gembrook

18 March 2006

While on an expedition on the weekend I drove past this shiny stick in the middle of the road. I was just able to avoid driving over its tail but was surprised that it stayed put. This gave an opportunity to hop out and take some snaps.

It was about 1.2m long. I think its quite pretty though I'm a little perturbed by the fact it stayed still with my car speeding past it. I'd like to think they flee on a close encounter so I'd have a good chance of not stepping on one in the grass some day.

I believe its a Tiger Snake, so its got quite serious venom. Though its only got little fangs so getting it in to me might have taken a little effort. I wasn't going to let it try.

Being spread across the road we didn't think was a good idea and might cause it to become flattened by the next vehicle so we tried to coax it off the road. Gentle persuasion worked, as it slid off a little while after the prod we gave it with a stick.
